Trachte Buildings

Have you ever wondered about the little metal buildings that dot older thoroughfares like Regent and Williamson Streets? Or the steel garages behind older homes that look like “Quonset huts”? These are Trachte buildings, a Madison original since tinsmiths Arthur and George Trachte built a small garage on Lake Monona in 1917. The style proved affordable for small businesses and popular for its simple design. The buildings are durable, too, as seen in the number still in use for restaurants, retail, cars, cabs, or cookouts.

Trachte Building Systems still operates in Sun Prairie. Check their Web site for more company history.

Sally Richie, a student at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, recently completed a survey of Trachte buildings in Madison. She performed a random survey through Madison neighborhoods and found Trachte buildings all over the city. By bicycle. During the winter. Take a tour of Trachte buildings in Madison from the comfort of your home with Sally and Trust researcher Carolyn Freiwald.
