Built in 1855 and 1856 by Willett S. Main, this building is the oldest commercial building and the oldest facing the Capital Square. Located where the western corner of the Capital Square and the east end of State Street meet, the building is a rare example of an intact, mid-19th century sandstone commercial construction. The Italianate, three-story building was constructed with locally quarried sandstone and is triangular, a reoccurring shape in Madison because of the diagonal avenues that radiate from the four cardinal points of the Capital Square. The Willett S. Main building is a Madison landmark and was nominated by the Trust in 1994. home |
