Madison Landmarks Nominated by the Trust

Washington School
345 West Dayton Street

Currently known as the Ruth Bachhuber Doyle Administration Building, this building has a history of public education. Built in 1939 by Madison architect John Flad, the school was designed to accommodate children with disabilities. The school is an example of Art Moderne style, also known as Streamlined Moderne.

In 1936, the Madison Board of Education evaluated the physical conditions of education buildings, which consisted of Washington School, Doty School and Draper School. The board recommended that a new school be built. The new Washington School opened in February, 1940 with 500 students enrolled, including 70 children with disabilities.

Washington School is a Madison Landmark and was nominated by the Trust in 1996.
