Madison Landmarks Nominated by the Trust

Orpheum Theatre
216 State Street

This premiere “movie palace” was built between 1925 and 1927 by the Chicago architectural firm Rapp & Rapp. The theater was designed in the Art Deco and French Renaissance styles. Originally a Vaudeville house used for live shows and plays, the Orpheum has hosted such entertainers as Frank Sinatra and Liberace. The Orpheum has operated as a venue for movies, live music, dance and comedy.

It has survived many attempts to change its function as a “first-run” theater, and in 1998, Madisonian Henry Doane rescued the Orpheum from being converted into an IMAX movie house.

The Orpheum is a Madison Landmark and was nominated by the Trust in 1997.
