Photo Gallery: Doubletake Line of
cars at State & Gorham for free oil
Southeast
corner of State and Gorham Streets
The Pennsylvania Oil Company Filling Station at the corner of State and Gorham was giving away free oil when this picture was taken on January 17, 1927, fours years after fire destroyed the Hausman Brewery on the same site. The little gas station was demolished sometime after 1942 and replaced by a bigger one. An electric trolley car system had already been in operation for 35 years and ended operation only seven years later when a severe ice storm on February 13, 1935 paralyzed service. The trolley cars were scrapped before months end. Jacobson Auto Dealership and Fox Motor Sales Company were two of a half dozen large auto dealerships just off State Street that prided themselves on showcasing their cars inside their buildings. home |
