[Note: For information on reserving Gates of Heaven for special events, call the Madison Parks Department at 608-266-4711.] The Gates of Heaven Synagogue was built in 1863 for the Ahavath Achim congregation of German Jewish immigrants. The synagogue, the first built in Madison and the third oldest in the country, is Victorian Romanesque in its design. The Gates of Heaven is a local landmark owned by the Madison City Park’s Department. The synagogue is on the National Register of Historic Places. A recognition ceremony to thank contributors, and dedicate the new plaque and memorabilia case took place in 1998. A financial contribution by the Trust helped make the plaque and case possible. home |
