2008 Preservation Awards Few Street Garages
Andy Fielding and Leila Harris, owners When Andy Fielding decided to build new garages for his 1911 bungalow on North Few Street and the adjacent Queen Anne home he rents on East Johnson Street, he didn’t take the job lightly. Andy wanted to be sure that any new buildings he added to his properties would complement the style and craftsmanship of the original houses. Both of these houses have been well maintained over the years, retaining much of their original interior and exterior features. In order to respect the preservation of these homes, he studied their distinctive features and sought to mirror those unique architectural details in the new buildings. He took cues from the slopes of the roofs and the width of the clapboards, and took notes from historic garages around town that caught his eye. With other decisions, Andy went beyond what many homeowners would have done to ensure that the garages would blend into their historic surroundings. His efforts included requesting a variance from the zoning board for permission to place the buildings in what he felt was the most appropriate configuration for the properties. And despite the size of some of the vehicles on the road today, Andy limited the sizes of the garages to keep them in scale with the homes and lots. While his designs successfully blend with the original homes, they have also become notable additions to the neighborhood and have received many compliments from his neighbors. Andy’s appreciation for the well-preserved bungalow and Queen Anne style houses he owns resulted in a successful compatible construction. His fondness for historic buildings began as a teenager helping his mother restore a historic house in Alexandria, Va. He was drawn to the quality of materials and craftsmanship found in historic buildings and has since rehabilitated nine historic homes in Vancouver, Philadelphia, and Madison. He’s also won an award from the Maryland Historical Trust for his restoration of a home there. home |
