2007 Preservation Awards Paoli House Hotel
6891 Paoli Road, Paoli Built prior to 1890, the Paoli House was the oldest hotel in Paoli. The two-story building was a four-room hotel and dining hall that served the local grist mill’s customers in the early 20th century. Attached to the rear of the hotel is an original box house built around 1850. Owner Bill Hastings suspects that it may have been the original miller’s cottage and/or used by the hotel as a kitchen. Bill used an old photo of the hotel as a guide for the exterior restoration. He removed the aluminum siding and repainted the original clapboard. Double doors on the left front were restored. Long, narrow windows with mullions were made by Amish craftsmen with old-fashioned float glass. Drop ceilings were removed in the interior to expose tin ceilings. Cast iron pipes were replaced with modern plumbing, and foam insulation was added throughout. Shag carpeting and linoleum were removed, and the original wood floors were refinished. The restored main floor will be an art gallery and the second floor will serve as an apartment with a view of the old grist mill, which houses Bill’s graphic design and advertising business. home |
