2006 Preservation Awards Adolf and Edna Kannenberg Residence
1252 Sherman Avenue Owners Michael and Pam Druhan undertook extensive restoration in 2004-05 of the Tudor Revival style home at 1252 Sherman Avenue. The Druhans are especially proud of the historically faithful restoration and the project’s environmentally responsible components, including a rain garden, efficient mechanical systems and healthful removal of asbestos and lead paint. Constructed in 1930, the home was designed for Adolf Kannenberg by his friend, architect Alfred Clas. A Wisconsin native, Clas (1860-1942) patterned the house after his own home in Milwaukee. The Sherman Avenue home is significant as one of only two known designs by Clas in Madison—the other being the grand, Neoclassical style State Historical Society Building (1898) at the end of State Street. With partner George Bowman Ferry, Clas organized the esteemed and highly productive firm of Ferry & Clas. The partners designed numerous important Milwaukee landmarks including the Milwaukee Public Library and Pabst mansions.
