2004 Preservation Awards 164 North Street, Sun Prairie
164 North Street, Sun Prairie Madison Trust members Bob and Carol Kincaid bought the large Victorian home at 164 North Street in Sun Prairie nine years ago. At that time, the home was divided into two units and had previously been separated into as many as three or four units. It was covered in aluminum siding, with most of the original, decorative trim removed from around the windows. An historic double-decker porch had also been removed. The imposing home, very close the Sun Prairie’s downtown business district, was built in 1901. It later served as a funeral home in the 1930s and 1940s. Bob and Carol weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, tearing off the aluminum siding and sanding and repainting the original clapboard siding themselves. Working with Paul Fisher of Glueck Architects in Madison and Muir Cabinetry and Construction out of Sauk City, the Kincaids transformed the house. Bill Muir and crew built a substantial front porch, in keeping with the historic character of the home. They also recreated scalloping and sunburst details that had been long ago removed. Aluminum storm windows were replaced with wooden ones. The whole project took about two years. Now the Kincaids are turning their attention to the interior, where they anticipate a 10-year project. home |
